Fishing & Brown Bear Tours
Icy Strait Point, Alaska

Icy Strait Point Fishing + Bear Watching

Our Icy Strait Point fishing tour is designed for cruise passengers that are looking for an Alaskan excursion that is off the beaten path. We’ll depart from the port entrance and drive through the Alaska Native Tlingit village of Hoonah before merging onto old logging roads that will take us to a remote river. During the ride and along the river it is common to spot wildlife- the island has more brown bears per square mile than almost anywhere else on the planet.

We’ll be fishing a wild “last frontier” type area with little signs of civilization to be found. As we fish and hike along the river, you will be amazed by the landscapes that surround us. Depending on the time of year, we’ll fish for Salmon and/or Trout. You will have the choice between fly fishing and spin fishing, and no prior experience is required.

Fishing near Icy Strait Point allows you to check an activity off your bucket list while exploring the nature and wildlife around the beautiful Tongass National Forest. We may even have the chance to watch salmon spawn and pick wild berries. Guests on our full day tour will be given the option to cook and eat their catch during the excursion.

We often check in with our guests after their cruise to see how the rest of their trip went. Almost every guest tells us that THIS TOUR was the highlight of their whole cruise. Are you ready to NatVenture with us?

NOTE: Chest waders (provided) are required for this trip. If the circumference of your calf is greater than 17 inches, our waders might not fit you. If you have large calves, please bring your own.

Icy Strait Point Bear Search + Island Adventure

Bear watching near Icy Strait Point is about as good as it gets. Chichagof Island has among the highest brown bear population densities in the world! We’ll pick you up from the entrance of the Icy Strait Point, travel through the Tlingit village of Hoonah, and then take old logging roads into the Tongass National Forest.

Unlike any other tour at this port, ours is designed for active and adventure-seeking travelers who prefer to spend time searching for bears on foot rather than just from a vehicle. We will drive to remote destinations and then hike along beaches, up rivers, and/or through muskegs. You will be given the option to wear waders so we can explore places others can't. The difficulty of the hiking we do can be tailored to the desires of your group.

In addition to searching for bears, you will also have a chance to learn about the other animals and plants that make up the temperate rainforest. Depending on the timing of your visit, we may be able to watch salmon spawn and pick wild berries.

You'll travel off the beaten path and visit areas of the island that most cruise ship passengers never see. We will see untouched nature and enjoy the solitude of this wild place. This is a personalized tour with an experienced local as your guide.
